Solution to Ending Chicago Gun Violence: It Starts at Home
On June 20, 17-year-old Tiara Viramontes died at 5:24pm after being shot at 4:48am on Sunday in the Garfield Park area, officials stated. According to DNAInfo Chicago, Viramontes and a 30-year-old man were in the back of a building on the 3500 block of West Huron Street when several people fired shot at them, police said. She was hit in the back of her head and the older man was hit in his upper right leg. The autopsy showed she died from the gunshot wound that hit the back of her head and is indeed a homicide.
This is not breaking news because tons of people are shot in Chicago almost every day, and it is sad that the news like WGN Chicago feels the need to announce when the city goes at least 24 hours without any gun violence. I do not feel bad for her parents. What was she doing out at 4:48am with a 30-year-old man? Where were her parents?
See people, it is not the governments job to protect you or your kids. It is your job. YOUR JOB. Now Chicago violence is not going to end one day to the next, it might even take more than 10, maybe even 15+, years. There is a simple start to ending it: parents knowing where their child is at all times. The parents must know who their child's friends are, where they hang out, set a curfew and not allow them to be out until 5am the next day.
But what if they have parents who do not care about them? That is neglect and the child should be taken away from them. If the parents are not doing anything to make their first priority their child, then what are they doing being parents? There are so many families who try to have kids and unfortunately cannot. Everything begins at home, from safety to manners, it begins at home. It is saddening that this young girl fell victim to gun violence and she did not deserve that, but this could have easily been prevented.
We need stricter gun control! HAHA, NO. Chicago, next to California as a whole state, has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation and yet there are hundreds of innocent people falling victims to it every week. Criminals do not care about laws and do not even get ahold of their firearm legally. Stricter gun control will just make it harder for law-abiding citizens who want to protect themselves and who make use of their God given right to hold a firearm. We need to hit the core of the problem and that is to arrest those who sell guns illegally and get them out of the hands of irresponsible people.
