On July 1, 2017 , Cook County will be implementing a Soda Tax. This is not a tax on just soda, but any sugary or artificially flavored beverage. For instance, soda, sports drinks, iced tea, lemonade, juice, any flavored water you can think of will be taxed a penny per ounce. " A penny per ounce, you say? That's nothing! Stop complaining! " If a penny per ounce sounds like practically nothing, let us do the math. A case of Coca-Cola is 12 cans. Every can is 12 fl oz. Each can will be taxed .12 cents. .12 cents x 12 = 1.44. $1.44 will be added onto your bill which does not include any tax that you already pay at the register (roughly 10%).
